A Brief History of WKEU Radio

In recent years AM radio has experienced a strong resurgence, especially in major markets. But in smaller markets, AM radio is still a vital community service. Programs with a local flavor dominate. Communities turn to their local radio stations not only for the latest in national news, but to find out what is happening in local politics, civic organizations, and area sporting events. Most people who listen to the radio in Georgia know of powerful stations like those of the Atlanta market, but it is the small town communities with their 1000 watt stations that give a distinct flavor to the airwaves.

One such radio station in Griffin, Georgia is WKEU. It is the station that I grew up listening to as I got ready for school and that sang me to sleep at night.

Founded in 1934, WKEU has served the community of Griffin with distinction. Today, WKEU is a leader in community affairs and holds a prominent place in the daily business of the city.

In 1934, there were few radio stations on the air in the nation. Radio broadcasting started in Georgia on March 15, 1922. That is when what is now, WSB set the pace. This was the first true station in the state and the forerunner of more than 450 stations to come. Before WSB, broadcasting was limited to Amateur Radio operators who led the way in the development of radio as we know it today.
